Leadership for Life (cont-n)

(cont. from 21 & 22 October)

6. Be aware of Your Perceptions.

Whether a perception is born out of higher education or simple lighthearted story shared at a dinner party, each one of us interprets what we heard differently.. We’re all encountered the concept of “mind-over-matter.”

The situations that we find ourselves in can be enough to change our entire outlook , depending on our perception.
We really can control the power of our minds.

Certainly not by coincidence; when we focus our energy on the negative, we are consequently planting the seed of negativity in our lives.

One of the most unfortunate things to witness is someone who has a false perception of unrealistic expectations they’ve set for themselves. In turn they feel that their goals are unattainable. A downward spiral of frustration usually ensues and they become overwhelmed and discouraged until eventually what started with good intentions and promise ends in frustration and anger.

Minor changes in our perception will lead us to desirable outcomes. Naturally, the choices that we make are largely based on what we think is best for us, given our unique set of circumstances that will dictate the choices we make.

By closely monitoring our perceptions (right, wrong or different) we can start to better control our choices and in turn control whether or not we attain our desired success.

Leadership For Life (continuation)

4. Be Willing to Fail.

How do you measure success without failure?
To succeed at anything, we have to be willing to first accept that failure will exist on our way to success. Neither success nor failure is an overnight accomplishment; each equals the sum of our daily activities. Success or failure is cumulative over a week…a month…a year…a lifetime. Success can also be the product of an accumulation of failures.

As you may now see more clearly, success is a by-product of our way of thinking. It’s a philosophy and an approach to life.

5. Focus on Your Goals

Goals give you direction and when these goals are met; you get a feeling of accomplishment and material prove of your progress.
One thing to keep in mind is that we will always end where we put our focus.

Goals help us to mantain our focus.
They’re our road map leading us in the direction of our destination.

Goals are a means of incrementally measuring our success.

Leadership for Life

We all have relationship with people in our personal and professional lives where we provide guidance and/or exert influence. Often within these interactions, we assume leadership roles but do not perform the duties required of a leader. In order to cultivate a mutually satisfying relationship , you need to be able to apply principles of leadership.

1. Embrace Change

There is only one constant in life and that is change. No matter how hard you try, you cannot prevent change, so embracing it is your best option.
As human we tend to fear the unknown. The result of change, more often then not, is unpredictable and that scares most of us. We try to avoid change rather then accept it; this is common. In order to accept change and spin it in your favor we must first make the conscious decision (choice) to embrace it.

2. Link Choices to Desired Outcome

First we make our choices; then our choices make us.
There are probably very few people in this world that can honestly say that they have never heard a phrase similar to “You made your bed, now you got to lie on it.” It is difficult to argue the fact that as long as we have a freedom of choice, we will have the burdens and blessings of facing the consequences of those choices.
In order for our choices to become effective, we must commit ourselves to those decisions. How will you choose to be different?

3. Keep Your commitments

Are you indifferent to improving your life? Naturally, this would seem like an inappropriate question considering the fact that you decided to read Thought Of The Day.
The majority of our waking hours are spent thinking about participating in our careers, yet there is always something about it that we just don’t like.
Your commitment to your choices will be reflected in what you put forth in your daily activity.
As an individual, you have all the authority to make those changes in your life. Let the freedom of choice be the fuel to your commitment.
One must realize that when choosing to make a commitment there is an element of short term failure.

Laugh

Laugh when it all becomes so ludicrous there’s nothing else to do. Laugh big, deep laughs that open up your throat and your lungs and your belly. Laugh alone, laugh in concert with other laughers. At the movies, laugh when no one else laughs-and let them wonder what they’ve missed.

Laugh at your own mistakes, your own foibles, your own foolishness. Laugh in a face of fear. Laugh until you cry, laugh until you have a stomachache.

Let laughter be your medicine, your companion, your music of joy from within. Laugh in school or at work or in church. get up and leave the room if you must.

Laugh in public. Bend over laughing, start an entire room laughing. Start the whole world laughing, and don’t stop until you have the last laugh, she/he who laughs, lives.

Live to Learn

Live to learn. This year, learn more then you learned last year. Learn something totally different. To learn more about yourself, learn more about other person.

Learn how things work and how to fix them when they don’t. Learn to fend for yourself, to hold your own when under attack.

Learn to write with your nondominant hand; learn to draw from the right side of your brain. learn to skii; to play cribage, to carve, to speak Russian, to cook Oriental, to dance Swedish folk dances.

Learn something you never knew about your great-graaaandmother. As soon as you learn something, start teaching it to someone else.

Learn for the sake of learning, learn because wisdom is born from learning.
