1. Schedule a half-day of your life to organize and update your finances. Instead of viewing this exsercise with dread, pat yourself on the back and give yourself credit for taking responsibility for facing your financial facts. By taking the time to inform yourself about the reality of your net worth, you are putting naivete behind you and acting like an adult you are.
2. Gather all your financial documents. That includes insurance policies; checking, savings, an investment account statements, mortgage papers, credit card bills, alimony receipts, and so on. Remember the equation “All That You Own Minus All That You Owe Equals Your Net Worth” and develop a clear statement of outstanding debts versus current and projected income.
3. After that create your financial Vision. Do it in your journal. Make your words sing back to you on the page. Remember to create financial vision so compelling and personally meaningful that it motivates you to pass up tempting but less important purchases in order to save for your top priorities.
4. Call up a financial savvy friend and ask if you can buy him or her lunch or dinner. Take your financial vision statememnt to show them. Ask if they have any recommendations about how you could better manage your money. Welcome their suggestions.
